Retreating to Da Trach (Khoai Chau, Hung Yen province), he waged a war of attrition and succeeded in gaining the upper hand leading to victory. He proclaimed himself Trieu Viet Vuong at the death of Ly Nam De. Attacked by surprise in 571 by Ly Phat Tu, a nephew of Ly Nam De, he killed himself at the Dai Nha estuary (in Nam Dinh province). A temple in his honor is now located in Dai Nha.
