Village Watchman in Vietnamese Old Society

In ancient times, a village watchman was elected by the villagers to attend to general security of the village, usually a member of the corps of officials of the village, and assisting the chief and his deputy to collect taxes and mobilize the villagers for corvée labor.

After about three years of service, he would retire and become a member of the corps of retired officials of the village (kỳ mục).
