The pagoda is located in Co Le town, Truc Ninh district, Nam Dinh province. It was initially built by bonze Nguyen Minh Khong, who cured King Ly Than Tong (1128 – 1138) and, later taught the heir-apparent.

The pagoda was rebuilt in 1920 by the Most Venerable Pham Quang Tuyen, according to his own design, with bricks, cement and mortar.

Its architecture is quite unique as it combines the features of Vietnamese traditional architecture with European Gothic elements; and as such the pagoda looks somewhat like a Catholic church. In front of the pagoda is 12- storey stupa, 32m in height, with 8 faces; it was built from 1926 to 1927. The stupa is based on a huge tortoise whose head is oriented toward the pagoda.
