This communal house is located in Chu Minh commune, Ba Vi district, Hanoi. It was built during the Chinh Hoa reign (Le dynasty), at the end of the 17th century.
It lies on the edge of the commune, facing the south and looking quite impressive. Artistically it continues the traditions of Tay Dang communal house, but uses a new building material: iron-wood. It has five rooms, two wings and a large floor. Viewed from outside, its large roof seems to make up 2/3 of the land area of the house.
The iron-wood columns are bigger in size than an arm’s embrace and have elaborate carvings. As a result, the house looks more solid and more impressive than Tay Dang communal house. It is regarded by researchers as one of the communal houses which mark the apex in the sculptural art of Vietnam.
Chu Quyen communal house is devoted to the cult of Nha Lang (571 – 603), son of Ly Phat Tu, a Vietnamese King of the 6th century.
