OPTION 1: The Paradise of Terraced Fields in La Pan Tan
The terraced fields on the Mu Cang Chai plateau are a marvel of nature and human endeavor, and the largest and most beautiful ones are at La Pan Tan, the crown jewel of the region.
8:30 AM: After breakfast at the ecolodge, the car takes you 12 km to La Pan Tan, honored as the paradise of terraced fields. As you start along winding slopes, you immediately feel the majesty of the landscape. You will feel as though you have stepped into a vivid painting, with the green of young rice mixed with the golden hues of ripe rice. This is also a chance to learn about the life, culture and resilient spirit of the ethnic minorities here. Remember to fully charge your phone and camera batteries!
After about 2.5 hours of walking, you reach the symbol of Mu Cang Chai: a large, round terraced field like a golden tray in the middle of vast mountains. Your car picks you up and continues for another 7 km along a rustic road lined with terraced fields on both sides. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, trying the rich, traditional flavors of the highlands.
After lunch, a steep trail of about 1.8 km (45 minutes to 1 hour) leads to the center of the most majestic terraced fields, famously shaped like horse hooves. This is an ideal spot to watch the sunset. If time permits, the trail carries on for another 2 km to a H'Mong village perched on the mountain slopes, with a stop at a bamboo forest.
Finally, descend to where your car waits to take you back to the ecolodge for a dinner by the fire.
- Walking distance: approx. 7 km (morning) + 7 km (afternoon)
- Walking duration: approx. 5 hours
OPTION 2: Trekking up to the Dinosaur's Back
After a delightful breakfast with a cup of aromatic coffee at the ecolodge, you are driven to the starting point of your walk. You will find yourself in a quiet, sparsely populated environment, with occasional solitary houses along the road.
Along the way you pass a mesmerizing bamboo forest reminiscent of scenes from historical movies, a favorite spot for artistic photos. Continuing along the narrow trail, you reach a H'Mong village, simple yet remarkably beautiful, where friendly locals greet you with smiles.
The terraced fields in this area resemble pieces of a meticulously arranged natural artwork, crafted by generations of diligent hands over hundreds of years. When you reach the Dinosaur's Back, the grandeur of Mu Cang Chai will captivate you, rain or shine. Enjoy a picnic lunch while marveling at the landscape.
Your adventure continues downhill into the valley. After approximately two hours of walking, a waiting car and driver take you back to the ecolodge for a cozy dinner at the on-site restaurant.

After approximately two hours of walking, reach villages inhabited by the H'Mong ethnic community. Here, discover the simple daily lives and traditional lifestyles of local residents. Although communication may be limited by the language barrier, the villagers are known for their warm and welcoming nature, and you may have the opportunity to visit their homes.

After breakfast, we transfer to Cat Cat village and follow the steps downhill. You stop by a waterfall and a hydroelectric station for a while before continuing the trek on a dirt trail through rice paddy terraces, with spectacular scenery along a narrow river. You eventually arrive in Y Linh Ho village of the Black H'Mong minority, where you rest and are served lunch near the river.
After lunch, head toward Muong Hoa Valley. You pass through Lao Chai village of the Black H'Mong and then Ta Van village of the Giay minority, following a very popular trekking route. Step away from the crowds and discover the traditional art of H'Mong indigo batik in peaceful Lao Chai Village. Held in a local H'Mong home, this hands-on workshop invites you to learn the story behind batik, rooted in a forest legend of bees and indigo, and try your hand at creating wax-resist patterns using traditional tools.
Take your time to enjoy the slow, meditative process. After dyeing your piece in natural indigo, the local family will complete the drying and deliver your artwork to your hotel the next morning. More than just a class, this is a heartfelt cultural exchange and a glimpse into everyday H'Mong life in the highlands.
You return to Sapa from Ta Van by car.
