People in Vietnam are very friendly, polite and generous and try their best to make foreign guests feel comfortable. It is very common in Vietnam, both in the cities and country towns to invite the visitors to home to meet the family. Visiting homes of the locals further enriches the experience of visiting Vietnam. By having knowledge of the Etiquette & Behavior of people in Vietnam it will be easier to mingle with the crowd and avoid some of the social taboos during your visit.
The Vietnamese dress conservatively. Tourists can wear shorts, unless they enter a culturally sensitive area such as a temple or pagoda. However, people may be judgmental. Tourists must take care of their belongings and beware of pickpockets.

Do's
- Always dress appropriately, do not wear revealing clothes.
- Always notice when entering someone's house, at some houses it is necessary to remove your shoes at the front door.
- Always ask for permission first when taking a photograph of someone. In case, they do not want to be clicked, DO NOT push the issue or offer money.
- Always carry drinking water with you and drink plenty of bottled water
- Always carry a hotel business card from the reception desk when venturing out.
- Always leave your excess cash, airline tickets, passports and valuables with the hotels safety deposit facility.
Don'ts:
- Never wear singlets, shorts, dresses or skirts, or tops with low-neck lines and bare shoulders to Temples and Pagodas as it is considered extremely rude and offensive.
- Never give your empty water bottles, sweets and candies to the local people when trekking through ethnic minority villages.
- Never sleep or sit with the soles of your feet pointing towards the family altar in someone's house.
- Never carry more cash than you really need for that day.
- Never lose your temper in public or when bargaining for a purchase.
- Never click photographs of military installations or anything to do with the military as you might be charged for breach of national security.
- Never carry video cameras into the ethnic minority villages as they consider it to be too intrusive by many local people.
