Located in the Northeast of Vietnam in the Gulf of Tonkin, Ha Long Bay is one of the World’s Wonder. In 1998, Halong Bay was recognized as a world Heritage site.  The Bay covered the area of 1553 sq. km with 1969 limestone islands and islets of various sizes and shapes, of which 989 have been named.

The Halong area looks very much similar to some world famous sites such as: The Limestone Garden in Quilin, China and Phuket, Thailand. But Halong Bay is larger in the size and more beautiful than two other counterparts

There are three bays in the area: Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay and (Lan Ha Bay) in Cat Ba archipelago. Those bay look very much similar with Limestone Island and islets which emerged from emerald water. There are more than 3000 island and islets in the whole area of three bays: Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay (in the Cat Ba arch.).

The area of Halong Bay is recognized as the World Natural Heritage Site that covered the area of 434 square km only with 775 islands. It looks like a giant triangle with Dau Go Island (in the west), Ba Ham (three lakes) Lake (in the south of Halong) and Cong Tay Island (in the east of Halong Bay) as its three angle points. The nearby area is the buffer area and areas classified as national beauty spots in 1962 by the Ministry of Culture and Information.

Those limestone islands and islets have experienced unpredictable changes over time and they take different shapes from different angles of view. In the foot of each island and islet, after thousand of years, the water from the wave just slaps the lime stone and the foot of the island getting eroded. Some islands have the shape like a chop stick and may be collapse in some year later. Here, we come to realize that those islands and islets are not dumb inanimate things but are vivid and soulful.

Halong Bay Caves & Grottos
Halong Bay has many breath taking caves and grottos such as Thien Cung (Heaven Palace), Dau Go (Wooden Heads), Sung Sot (Amazing cave), Trinh Nu (version girl), Tam Cung and many others. Some caves are being opened and served for tourists to visits. But some caves are closed in order to preserver for the later generations.
There are two most beautiful caves in Halong Bay:

+)  The Heaven Palace cave (Thien Cung in Vietnamese). This caves was discovered in 1995 only, with very small entrance this cave was under covered for thousand years when is only few km from Halong city. The cave was discovered by chance by a family of a fish man. The man and his child try to cut some wood for lodge on the island, they drop their knife and they try to find it. Finally they found the huge cave. They got a big bonus from the local government at that time.
+)  Next to Heaven Palace cave on the same island is the Wooden Head; this cave was used since 12 century by local people. This cave has a huge entrance and the beautiful decoration of the color inside. Both Heaven palace and Wooden Head cave are the popular place for Halong Bay One Day Trip.

Ha Long Bay is also attached to glorious pages of Vietnamese history, with famous sites such as Van Don, a bustling trade port in the 12th century, charming Bai Tho Mountain, and not very far away from here is the Bach Dang River which witnessed two famous naval battles of the Viet’s ancestors against invaders. Also, Ha Long is one of the cradles of human kind with the glorious Halong Culture culture in the late Neolithic age, discovered at such archeological sites as Dong Mang, Xich Tho, Soi Nhu and Thoi Gieng.

Ha Long is also home to great biodiversity with typical eco-systems like mangrove forest, coral and tropical forest. It is also home to thousands of plants and animals of numerous species, for example shrimp, fish and squid. Some species are particularly rare and can be found no where else.

With such special values, at the 18th Session of UNESCO’s Council of World Heritage held on 17 December 1994 in Thailand, Ha Long Bay was officially placed on the list of the World Natural Heritage. In 2000, UNESCO recognized it as the World Heritage for the second time for its geographical and geomorphologic values. This confirms the global premier value of Ha Long Bay. <<<
