Watching egrets in Thu Duc

From Thu Duc corner, if travelers go towards Long Thanh My (Dist. 9, Ho Chi Minh City) and ask the way to Egret Garden, they will be surprised because everyone knows the place. Coming there, visitors can not only watch the beauty of nature but also enjoy frozen coconut and rural dishes at eateries of garden owners.

Coming to the Egret Garden, Visitors can take a rest by lying on hammocks in the eatery of Ms. Tu De, enjoy frozen coconut and rural dishes. Those wishing to see the egrets more clearly can hire boats to sail along the river at price of VND150, 000 per hour (for one time with 10 people). In addition, visitors can also drop by the Egret Garden I, where there dishes and drinks as well as free-of-charge fruit services. The orchid is planted on an islet which is 15 minutes boating from the land. Coming there, visitors can enjoy the feeling of being "Robinson".

The land leading to Egret Garden is both long and narrow, which is just wide enough for a motorbike. It also has many roundabouts, so tourists may get lost easily. However, the scenery on two sides of the road is very beautiful, full of purple cornflowers. Sometimes, tourists can come across fish ponds, bamboo groves that shadow a session of the road. After 10 minutes riding, you will arrive at Egret Garden. A smoothly green space appears in your eyes with immense coconut rows. There are many kinds: green fruit coconut, red fruit one, high one, low one... Gleaming inside the coconuts are bamboo groves that are half as high as the coconuts. The garden where egrets reside belongs to two separate owners. It can be said that they are two pieces of land that is close to each other and all planted with coconuts. Egrets reside here abundantly, so the local authorities preserve the garden and encourage the owners to develop it. The owners open catering services for tourists to visit the garden and watch the flock of egrets.

The special thing is that next to a vibrant noisy City, there exists a place which is very quiet and fresh with green trees, white egrets and a sluggish river. Everyday, the egrets wake up and flyaway at Sam, return at 5-6pm. Those wishing to watch the egrets must wait until they return. Ms. Tu De, one of the garden owners, says, "The egrets just utilize the garden as a sleeping place; they do not make nests or give birth here. In their breeding season, where they go to make nests is unknown. Early in Aprils, the entire flock move away. On 10th day of 7th lunar year, they return with a flock of young egrets." She tells that egrets came to the garden in 1980, there were thousands of them. At first, many people hunted egrets. When the State prohibited egret hunting and put them in preservation list, the hunting stopped. Since then, the egret garden in the outskirt of Saigon has become it destination of those wishing to find out about nature and the egret flock.

In the afternoon, visitors enjoy wonderful moments by watching thousands of egrets coming back. They fly following beautiful shapes like talented pilots are practicing flying in a formation. Their sounds stir a corner of a vast space. Some egrets fly some rounds before landing on coconut trees. Egrets' sounds slowly echo down and stop when they sleep after a day of finding food in fields. And so, from day to day, from year to year, the image of an egret flock leaving in the morning and returning in the evening has become familiar to the local residents although they are still novel and distinctive to visitors. The image is also an attraction to photographers wishing to have distinctive images. Many have come here and "set an ambush" to "grab" spectacular photos.

Each of us have unforgettable memories of our childhood, and certainly, in the numberless old memories, egret always accounts for an important part in grandmother's stories, mother's lullaby ... They are like a beauty lying deep in the soul and shining surprisingly splendidly being provoked. And the more precious thing is that the noisy Vibrant City contains a sky of memories. Saying goodbye to the place but certainly the egrets, the river, and the sweet fragrance of the rural garden will remain in the soul of visitors.
