Bars and restaurant in Can Tho | ||
While many of Can Tho's eateries line the riverside, a bunch of reasonable options are also clustered around the hotels towards the southern end of town, and a block or so back from the river. You won't have to look too far at all to find a good place to eat in Can Tho. Com Chay An Lac - Vegetarian hideaway 10 Dien Bien Phu, Can Tho - Can Tho Tel: (071) 815 188; This hole-in-the-wall vegetarian restaurant boasts a wall dedicated solely to meat substitute products, and while it may mostly look like dog-food, it tastes good. Popular with locals, especially for take-away they offer good soups, fresh spring rolls and a variety of other ready-made vegie dishes, plus service with a smile. Vegetarians won't be disappointed and meat eaters may be fooled. English menu. Type of Food: Vegetarian only / Vietnamese / Goc Pho - Jovial and local 83 Phan Ding Phung St, Can Tho - Can Tho A boisterous and very local scene, Goc Pho attracts a steady stream of young Canthonians with their brisk service, cold drinks and good food. Goc Pho has a jovial atmosphere and if you find yourself still hungry, dive around the corner to one of the stalls for a late night top-up. Type of Food: Vietnamese / Hop Pho - Coffee and ice cream with the locals 6 Ngo Gia Tu St, Can Tho - Can Tho Set behind the Golf Hotel, this sprawling two-level coffee and ice-cream emporium is a must-try if you want to get away from the tourist crowds and relax in a purely Vietnamese environment. Popular with students and grannies alike, the well-alcoholised coffees carry enough sugar to send you into cardiac arrest and the ice creams are not far behind. Exhaustive, bordering on bizarre drinks list -- try the Aloe Vera and Grenadine cocktail, or perhaps the fresh milk and orange juice concoction. Very welcoming staff. Recommended. Type of Food: Coffee and/or Tea House / Vietnamese / Hotel 31 - Popular local hangout 31 Ngo Duc Ke St, Can Tho - Can Tho Tel: (071) 825 287; While western tourists rule the roost here at lunch, in the evenings the restaurant at Hotel 31 rests firmly in local hands. A full house is a regular deal here and while we gave it a go, it seemed we didn't have as much luck as the locals in our menu choices -- local knowledge perhaps, so ask for whatever the table next to you is having if you want to try here. Reasonable prices. Type of Food: Vietnamese / Mekong Restaurant - Riverside hole-in-the-wall Hai Ba Trung St, Can Tho - Can Tho The building if not the bar and restaurant has been in action since 1965 and the fries here taste as if they've been cooked in oil that hasn't been changed since then. Mekong has one of the most enthusiastic touts we've ever come across -- he doesn't shy from chasing cars down the road to bring in more traffic to this small hole-in-the-wall. Attracts a steady crowd of Vietnamese who go for the noodle soup, local characters who knock back beer, and travellers who regret ordering the fries. Reasonable prices and a comprehensive western and Vietnamese menu, with a few goat specials thrown in. Type of Food: International / Vietnamese / Nam Bo - Lofty atmosphere, lofty prices 50 Hai Ba Trung St, Can Tho - Can Tho This fancy two-storey colonial building attracts tourists like bugs to a lantern and it's easy to see why. The second floor terrace is ideal for people watching and savouring the late afternoon Can Tho light. Service is particularly good and friendly, and while the food and drinks are both succulent and refreshing, the prices may leave your throat a little dry. A good option for a splurge. Type of Food: International / Vietnamese / Phong Nam Restaurant - Complimentary snake wine 48 Hai Ba Trung St, Can Tho - Can Tho Tel: (071) 812 077; Playing second fiddle to the flash Nam Bo next door, Phong Nam is popular with tour groups and travellers alike. Jovial staff lay on complimentary snake wine to get you started. Their fare is good and the prices far more down to earth than its lofty neighbour. Decor is non-existent but the atmosphere can get pretty raucous. Type of Food: International / Vietnamese / |
